No todas las organizaciones de marketing cuentan con una persona que ostente el riguroso título de “gerente de producto”; aunque hay muchos puestos de ese tipo, a quienes los ocupan podría llamárseles “gerentes de marca”, “gerentes de marketing” u otro título afín. Con el nombre genérico de gerente de producto designaremos a las diversas clases de estructura organizacional y de compañías, sin importar si ofrecen productos de consumo, productos industriales o servicios. ¿Qué distingue a este libro de muchos otros dedicados a la “administración de productos” o a la “estrategia de marketing”? En que adopta el punto de vista de un ejecutivo cuya responsabilidad fundamental es un producto o una línea de productos estrechamente relacionados. En términos generales tiene dos funciones principales. Primera, se encarga de planear las actividades vinculadas con el producto o con la línea de productos. Por tanto, ha de analizar el mercado —clientes, competencia y ambiente externo— para después convertir esta información en objetivos y estrategias de marketing del producto. Segunda, debe lograr que la empresa apoye los programas recomendados en el plan. Para lograrlo debe coordinarse con otras áreas como investigación y desarrollo para ampliar la línea de productos, manufactura, investigación de mercado y finanzas. También debe mercadear el producto en el interior de la empresa para conseguir la asistencia y el apoyo de ejecutivos de nivel más alto.</text>
